Wagner Zaun Condo Project

This amazing loft located is located in a 120-year-old building in downtown Duluth, MN. It is the second and third floors of a three-story brick storefront located on the intersection of Lake and Superior. For those not familiar with Duluth, it’s just across a freeway bridge from Canal Park and the historic lift bridge. The second and especially the third floors have great views of Lake Superior.

This project was a complete rehabilitation by Wagner Zaun Architecture. Everything in this project was custom, and sustainable or eco-friendly materials were used whenever possible. This included the use of Plyboo (Bamboo plywood), LED lighting, or original materials from the building whenever possible. The historic feel of the building was well maintained while giving it a contemporary layout and look.

This project presented some very unique challenges for architectural photography. The spaces were so wide open that it was important to keep foreground interest in the photos while featuring the vista of the room. Often I try to minimize the ceiling views, but the 18-foot ceilings were so gorgeous that they needed to be included whenever possible. The extreme difference in light levels also pushed my technique to the limits – it was often very dark in some of the areas with huge windows showing a bright view outside. This necessitated capturing a large number of images for each view and re-assembling them in post-production.

One of the interesting locations in the condo was the grand staircase. This space was 30 or so feet from top to bottom, and featured a skylight at the top. To show this feature, I did a vertical panorama by blending a shot of the lower portion of the room with the upper portion of the room. By the time I blended all of the images for light levels, it took nearly 30 images to make that single view.
